I felt inspired today to write about the concept of time and the sudden realization of its importance to me is because of a Specialized Training we had on Thursday. During this meeting we were discussing the meaning of time and the uses of our time.
What Is Time?
Let me start with sharing the definition of Time.
“A moment or definition of time allotted, available, used, or suitable for a purpose.” -Apple Dictionary (The only dictionary I have on me right now, so if you have another amazing definition I would love to read it in the comments below!)
Using this definition as a background reference, time can be allotted and used for a suitable purpose, and from my understanding time has existed as far back as the Creation of the World found in Genesis. Six Creation periods and a seventh for Rest. We do not fully understand God’s concept of time as it could be on a different level than ours, but as early as we know it was used to define a certain event or activity that happened.
How Can Time Be Used?
I love these quotes by Dallin H. Oaks because he teaches the principle of Good, Better, and Best.
“We have to forego some good things in order to choose others that are better or best because they develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthen our families.” […]
“Consider how we use our time in the choices we make in viewing television, playing video games, surfing the Internet, or reading books or magazines. Of course it is good to view wholesome entertainment or to obtain interesting information. But not everything of that sort is worth the portion of our life we give to obtain it. Some things are better, and others are best. When the Lord told us to seek learning, He said, ‘Seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom’ -D&C 88:118” […]
“That same challenge applies to the many meetings we hold–good to hold a meeting, better to teach a principle, but best to actually improve lives as a result of the meeting.”
I’m going to be flat out honest with you. I have had moments in time where there is an activity that is good, but I know that I could be doing something better and even something best; as is the eternal struggle with missionary work. Our goal is to always be doing something proactive that will bless the lives of those around us. Not every day is going to be beautifully perfect because perfection comes not in this life, but it does in the next; so don’t give up even when things aren’t going the way you want them to be.
My Goal In Writing Today About Time
Each of us has our own compelling Life Story that we are writing with every passing minute, hour, and day. What kind of things do we find in a story that make it an excellent read? A descriptive opening scenario, character development with a little bit conflict and resolution here and there. We are dynamic in the way that we live, and with every season or event creates a new chapter in our life.
