 Resistance Is Futile

Many of you may be familiar with the famous phrase from the Borg, the galactic arch nemesis to the human race in the Star Trek universe, “Resistance is futile!” For many years the Borg have always been just creepy to me for one main reason; they take away your moral agency or your ability to choose for yourself. The Borg are half humanoid and half technology. They invade worlds and races and basically “assimilate” or implant technology into their bodies that is supposed to enhance and add to their great collective mind. It’s kind of like a giant Bee Hive. When they assimilate someone they suppress their own consciousness and they are given a preprogrammed directive or assignment. This has always freaked me out! Not having the ability to make choices I think would make anyone feel squeamish.

I bet you are wondering where I am going with all of this. Well I was reading my scriptures recently and I read a verse in Alma 13:28 in the Book of Mormon which states,

28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering;

I was pondering over this scripture as it goes hand in hand with 1 Corinthians 10:13 in the New Testament which reads,

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that,

“All persons are entitled to their agency, for God has so ordained it. He has constituted mankind moral agents, and given them power to choose good or evil; to seek after that which is good, by pursuing the pathway of holiness in this life, which brings peace of mind, and joy in the Holy Ghost here, and a fulness of joy and happiness at His right hand hereafter; or to pursue an evil course, going on in sin and rebellion against God, thereby bringing condemnation to their souls in this world, and an eternal loss in the world to come.”

“Satan cannot seduce us by his enticements unless we in our hearts consent and yield. Our organization is such that we can resist the devil; if we were not organized so, we would not be free agents.”

“The devil has no power over us only as we permit him; the moment we revolt at anything which comes from God, the devil takes power.”

I want to simply testify that I know that our Heavenly Father did not send us here on this earth to fail. We are meant to succeed! I hope to express with all the energy of my soul that we can do anything and we can overcome anything! Believe in yourself, you are stronger than you realize.

One Comment on “ Resistance Is Futile

  1. Awesome post! It’s good to be reminded that resistance is NOT futile! “Our organization is such that we can resist the devil: if we were not organized so, we would not be free agents.” I love it! (Also, nice Star Trek reference. lol)
